Thinking of relocating to NYC...need advice from native new yorkers or those who successfully made the move?

I graduate from law in May and I might have an opportunity to move to NYC to work. Unfortunately it's in government so the pay isn't that much ($60k). I have a child so I would need a 2 bdrm in a decent area by really good schools. Everyone talks about how great a city it is, but I'm worried about not being able to support my child while paying student loans and high rent. What advice can you honestly give me? Also, what areas would you suggest I live in? Please ist and serious answers only please...
