Why does my puppy growl and snap at me?

My family has a 35 week old Maltipoo. (Maltese and a poodle mix) Lately he has been growling at everyone in my family when we try to take things that he steals late wrapper and paper towels. Some how he finds them and steals them. I have no idea how. The first time we heard him grow at us was when he got into my parents room and stole a period pad form the trash can in their bathroom. He hid under the bed and started to chew it up. We tried taking it from him with a broom and a back scratcher. He Snapped and growled very loudly every time we were almost able to take the ripped up pad. Sometimes we are successful with doing it this way. But sometimes it gets worse. We had to leave the room the last time to get him out.He is a first born of the litter so maybe he thinks he is the leader of all of us. Me and my family have no idea on what to do anymore. I feel like the growling and snapping is getting worse.It seems weird because he only seems to do this when we try to take away something he wants. I'm afraid that one day he will really end up husting us. Please help us! We need any advise about puppies as we can get!
